Martinez signed to train successor

With Tottenham Hotspur looking for a new coach, Roberto Martinez’s name has come to the fore regarding the vacant position.

Martinez signed an extension to his current deal in 2020 and officials said that he would train his successor to take over after the 2022 World Cup.

“Talk about a renewal of the current contract of the national manager, which ends on June 30, has been going on for some time and each time in a particularly constructive atmosphere,” it said.

“The coronavirus crisis delayed the process somewhat, but the contract extension is now confirmed and official.

“This allows Roberto Martinez to continue his work, lay the foundation for the future of Belgian football and train his successor to take over after the 2022 World Cup.”

Martinez himself had said he wanted to continue working with the number 1 ranked nation.

“It was not the time to end the relationship. I felt I needed to carry on,” he said.

This though could all be brought crashing down if the latest information is to be believed.

Martinez asks agent to find club

Roberto Martinez’s agent is the same as Jose Mourinho coincidentally. Pini Zahavi brokered the Mourinho move to north London back in 2019.

The Spanish coach has reportedly asked Zahavi to sound out clubs to his availability and Spurs are said to be keen.

Martinez would start work with Toby Alderweireld on a club level having managed him with the national side.

However, having been out of the club game since 2016, Spurs would be taking an element of risk by bringing in the former Wigan and Everton coach.

With Wigan, Martinez won an FA Cup despite being relegated that same season.

He took over at Everton in 2013 and took them into the Europa League. However, in 2016, with his side in 12th with just one game left, the club sacked him after intense fan pressure.

Could he be the man to take Spurs forwards? It would be arguably his toughest job to date and a win at the Euros would certainly boost his stock.
