Can either of these two sides kick-start their respective Copa América campaigns?

Recent years have been the glory years for Peru.

First, in 2017, they qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1982, beating New Zealand 2-0 in the Inter-confederation play-offs.

Then, two summers ago, wins over Bolivia, Uruguay and Chile saw them reach a first Copa América Final since last winning the competition in 1975, losing 3-1 to Brazil at the Maracanã.

Despite this success, Ricardo Gareca is under pressure.

Peru are currently bottom of the World Cup qualification standings, with four points after six games, and are bottom of this Copa América group too.

They played their first match in this competition on Thursday night, getting hammered 4-0 by hosts and holder Brazil at Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos.

But, it’s not the match against the five-times champions of the world that is going to shape their fate in this group stages.

After this clash, la Blanquirroja still have to play the two weakest teams in Group B, Ecuador and then Venezuela.

So, even if they lost here, given that four out of five teams advance, it’s not time to panic.

Nevertheless, even a point would calm the nerves so will Peru get off the mark?

Can Colombia get back on track?

Colombia meanwhile have made a positive start to Copa América 2021, if not a convincing one.

On matchday one, Edwin Cardona scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Ecuador at Arena Pantanal.

The goal was a well-rehearsed set-piece just before the interval, eventually given by VAR after Cardona was initially flagged offside.

Then, on Thursday, Los Cafeteros were held to a goalless draw by Venezuela in Goiânia.

So, even if Colombia lost here and to Brazil in their final game, having taken four points off the group’s poorest two sides, they’re guaranteed to advance.

In general, Colombia are looking to establish themselves as one of South America’s strongest teams.

They’ve qualified for the last two World Cups, having not been at one this century before that, reaching the quarter-finals and then the round of 16.

Their one and only Copa América title was won 20 years ago on home soil, beating Mexico 1-0 in the final in Bogotá.

Since, they’ve only crashed out in the group stages only once, finishing third at Copa América Centenario and going out to Chile in a penalty shootout in the quarters two years ago.

Will Reinaldo Rueda’s side move top of Group B with a win at Estádio Olímpico Pedro Ludovico?

Prediction: Colombia 2-1 Peru

These two met in World Cup Qualifying just 18 days ago.

Goals from Yerry Mina, Mateus Uribe and Luis Díaz saw Colombia to a comfortable 3-0 away victory at Estadio Nacional del Perú.

Overall, Colombia are unbeaten in ten meetings with Peru, dating back to Peru’s quarter-finals victory at Copa América 2011.
