Thiago Silva and Thomas Tuchel set to extend their Chelsea stay

Chelsea successfully kept Manchester City at arm’s length from their first-ever Champions League trophy tonight in Porto, with the Blues securing their second win in a 1-0 affair at the Estádio do Dragão.

The postmortem surrounding City and Pep Guardiola’s failure to once again achieve what he has not managed to do since leaving Barcelona is sure to come, especially after both Fernandinho and Rodri being left off the teamsheet for the night’s proceedings.

But the night belongs to the blue side of London, and Thomas Tuchel deserves an immeasurable amount of praise after being appointed Chelsea boss in the wake of Frank Lampard being sacked halfway through the 2020-21 Premier League campaign.

It was a night to remember for both Tuchel and center-back veteran Thiago Silva. The pair failed at the final hurdle last season when Paris Saint-Germain lost to Bayern Munich before Silva found himself on his way to Stamford Bridge. Little did they know that a reunion was on the horizon and they would be reunited in a different shade of blue, but this time, they made it count when it mattered most.

On the back of the domestic improvement shown by Chelsea since Tuchel’s appointment, and now the club lifting its second Champions League trophy, both Tuchel and Silva are set to be rewarded with contract extensions if reports are to be believed.

Thiago Silva will sign his new contract with Chelsea until June 2022 – the one year extension clause will be triggered. He’s staying.

Fabrizio Romano tweeted not long after the final whistle in Porto that the pair are set to be together for at least another season. It is suggested that Silva will have his one-year extension activated by the club, while Chelsea will look to begin discussions with Tuchel over a long-term contract on the back of his achievements in the last half-season.

With two appearances in the final in the last two seasons, no one is on a bigger podium than Thomas Tuchel. Added to that success, his guiding hand helped propel Chelsea from uncertainty under Lampard to a top-four finish that guaranteed the Blues Europe’s top club competition next term without needing a win in Portugal. As Chelsea moves into the summer window, the certainty of a top-level manager at the helm could serve as a real boost to their ambitions to once again out-pace the likes of City, Manchester United, and Liverpool to the top spot in the Premier League. If Tuchel’s recent record against City is anything to go by (three wins from three), then Chelsea could be well on their way.
