“After the failure of the choice of Mediapro in 2018, Canal + regrets the decision of the Professional Football League (LFP) to retain Amazon’s proposal today to the detriment of that of its historical partners Canal + and beIN Sports. Canal + will therefore not broadcast Ligue 1. “ In an official statement released on Friday, the group Channel announced its withdrawal and its intention to say goodbye to the broadcasting rights of the French championship for the period 2021-2024.
A fairly brief press release, which therefore leaves Amazon the only broadcaster of Ligue 1. Next season, the American giant will have eight Ligue 1 matches, with the two remaining matches abandoned by Channel yet to distribute. In an email sent to the championship stables on Friday evening, the chairman of the group’s executive board Channel Maxime Saada explained this decision.
Saada charges the LFP and the clubs
“These lots, which represent 80% of L1 matches, including the ten best posters, were sold for € 250 million to Amazon whereas they had been acquired by Mediapro in 2018 for € 784 million. The LFP wrongly considered that Amazon’s proposal was cumulative with the amounts of the prizes awarded in 2018, namely the € 332 million from Canal + and the € 42 million from Free for the digital prize. This scenario does not exist. Canal + will not pay 332 M € for 20% of the matches, when Amazon broadcasts 80% for 250 M €. We will therefore not broadcast Ligue 1. After the Mediapro chimera, the LFP and the club presidents are therefore reproducing the same error as in 2018 ”, he said.
“I am aware of the emotion that this situation will create, both at home and externally. Be assured of our full mobilization to preserve our interests. There is no question of finding yourself in a situation where Canal + is the actor who pays the most, in order to have the least ”Saada added. Great savior of Ligue 1 this season, Channel will therefore not be part of the recovery …
