Another 10-match ban

Serie B striker Michele Marconi, who plays for Pisa, has been given a 10-match ban by FIGC Court of Appeal after new evidence found that the 31-year-old had said “the slave revolt” to Chievo midfielder Joel Obi.

The player had originally been cleared of the accusations but now faces punishment.

Joel Obi revealed his thoughts and feeling when he heard the abhorrent racist language.

“When I heard that phrase, my mind just went for a few minutes, asking myself if I’d really heard it,” Obi said.

“I kept playing, but my focus was elsewhere. It’s incredible that someone could use words like that today, especially with all the efforts people are making to weaken the ‘disease’ of racism.”

Publication of the new evidence is yet to come to light and will take a few days to do so.

Racism in football on the rise?

These criminal actions have seemingly become more prevalent during the period without fans in the grounds.

Several high profile incidents have occurred between players in just the last few months.

Slavia Prague defender Ondrej Kudela was found guilty of racism towards Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara.

The Czech Republic player was found to have abused the former Arsenal man and also given a 10-game ban. Whilst Kamara was also banned for assault.

Furthermore, La Liga recently failed to find evidence that Mouctar Diakhaby of Valencia had been racially abused by Cadiz forward Juan Cala. The Frenchman stormed off the pitch and did not return during a match between the two teams in early April.

This weekend, organizations in sport committed to a social media blackout to try and stop online abuse. However, maybe more also needs to be done to prevent player-to-player racial abuse from occurring.

Education programs and harsher punishments are surely a must, regardless of the increase in these incidents.
