Heaton returning to Old Trafford?
Tom Heaton could be making a return to Manchester United this summer, with Aston Villa unlikely to renew his contract according to reports.
Detail in transfer round-up:
Manchester United are in talks to sign Tom Heaton on a free, with #AVFC not expected to trigger contract extension.
Heaton does have other options. At 35, he’s weighing up whether to go to a club offering more games. #MUFChttps://t.co/mK7lWUBqzC

The English goalkeeper, who was at Manchester United for five years between 2005 and 2010 without making an appearance, is set to become the Red Devil’s third-choice goalkeeper upon the expiry of current third-choice Sergio Romero’s contract.
Now 35, Heaton played 20 times for Aston Villa in the 2019/20 season, but has not appeared for the Villians this season, thanks in no small part to the brilliant form of new signing Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine stopper, signed for £20 million from Arsenal in the summer of 2020, has quickly turned into one of the most capable shot-stoppers in the league, and has left no room in the side for an ageing Heaton.

Other options available
Heaton is thought to be strongly considering rejoining Manchester United, however he is also tempted by offers from elsewhere that would allow him far more game time. For context, Sergio Romero’s last Premier League appearance for Manchester United was almost four years ago, in the 2017/18 campaign, although he has made 27 appearances in various cup competitions in the years since.
Realistically, that would be what Heaton would be signing up for too. Counting as homegrown, he would help with regards to squad registration. However, he is unlikely to displace either Dean Henderson or David De Gea, who would both be ahead of the 35-year-old in the pecking order.
However, a return to Manchester could be a fitting end to a man whose career has spanned the last 15 years but never quite hit the heights that was expected of him when he debuted.
