New contract for Southgate
Despite some difficulties England were able to progress through their Euro 2020 group top of the pile.
After wins against both Croatia and the Czech Republic the draw against Scotland was put to one side as a test against Germany awaits Gareth Southgate and his side in the last 16.
However, regardless of how England fair against Joachim Low, it is expected that Southgate will be handed a new contract with England that will take him up to the 2024 European championships.
Henry Winter revealed that FA CEO Mark Bullingham had said they were happy with Southgate and that conversations would start after the Euros.
“We would love him to carry on beyond this contract,” said Bullingham. “Gareth knows we think he’s doing a great job and we’d like him to carry on. We’ll get into that formal conversation after the Euros.”

Southgate so far
Southgate began his time at England with a difficult Euro 2016 in which his side were knocked out by the unlikeliest of opponents in Iceland.
After a couple of years and plenty more talent being brought through into the England national side, Southgate was able to take his players to a World Cup semi-final.
Overcoming a dreaded penalty shootout against Colombia and navigating a Swedish quarter-final with relative ease.
However there has been criticism of Southgate’s style of play throughout his tenure as England manager. In addition to the fact that the success at the World Cup was diminished by elimination to Croatia, a nation whom many expected to be beaten by the Three Lions.
With Germany in the last 16, should England get knocked out of the European Championship at this stage again, pressure will increase from the home support and a new contract may be criticised.
However, the FA appear determined to go ahead with it regardless of this summer’s exploits.
The future looks bright with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham, Jack Grealish, Reece James and many more coming through, but is Southgate the right man to be its guide?
