Anfield showdown
The Saints are set to return to action on Saturday night, in a Premier League meeting with Liverpool.
Hasenhuttl and co. will head into proceedings with little to play for, sitting a full 10 points clear of the relegation zone.
They will therefore be after little more than a bounce-back performance, amid a stretch of four successive outings without a victory.
Liverpool, on the other hand, will no doubt enter Saturday’s Anfield clash with all guns blazing, as Jurgen Klopp’s men seek an unlikely return to the top-4.
As things stand, the Reds sit a full seven points back of 4th-placed Chelsea, albeit with a game in hand.
‘Hopefully next week’
A testing evening’s work therefore likely lies in store for Southampton, in two days’ time.
And the daunting task facing the St. Mary’s outfit is set to be made an even tougher one by the absence of the club’s main goalscoring threat.
Danny Ings was of course forced to sit out Southampton’s meeting with Leicester last time out, after picking up a hamstring injury against Tottenham the week prior.
In turn, Ralph Hasenhuttl was inevitably drawn on the English international’s wellbeing during his latest press conference this afternoon.
And the Saints boss went on to confirm that Ings is set to miss out once again this weekend, albeit amid the hope that the hitman will return to the fray versus Crystal Palace next week:
‘We have Ingsy still not available, still with some problems. Hopefully we find him back next week.’
‘We have a game against [Crystal] Palace on Tuesday, so maybe we have a look [on Ings]. It’s good that we have as many players as possible fit.’
Hasenhuttl continued:
‘Bertrand is out still, with a calf injury. Ori can maybe start with the team next week, he has a last scan to go but it looks okay.’
