Tielemans’ Leicester stint
After he impressed on loan during the second half of the 2018/19 campaign, Leicester signed Tielemans permanently in the summer of 2019.
The Foxes are believed to have paid French outfit AS Monaco around £40m to bring the midfielder to the King Power.
The Belgian has since established himself as a key cog in Brendan Rodgers’ side, notching 108 appearances in all competitions, across which he has scored 17 and assisted 19.
It was the 2020/21 campaign, though, which saw Tielemans produce arguably his best football in a Leicester shirt.
Despite largely operating in a deep midfield role, the former Anderlecht talent had managed to chip in with nine goals and six assists, including scoring the winning goal for Leicester in the FA Cup final vs Chelsea last month:
Tielemans staying put?
On the back of his super 2020/21, Tielemans found himself linked with Liverpool.
The Reds have lost Georginio Wijnaldum after the midfielder joined PSG on a free transfer due to his contract with Liverpool expiring and Tielemans, on paper, would look like a decent fit for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The player himself was drawn on the possibility of replacing Wijnaldum, but he remained rather coy on the situation, stating:
“That’s really none of my business right now. Let the journalists speak. They undoubtedly have a lot to do with that.
“But I don’t care about that. All I can do is make sure that I am as good as possible on the pitch.”
But what is Leicester’s stance on potentially selling the midfielder?
The Foxes have a good record of picking up players for cheap and moving them on for more money.
Ben Chilwell, Harry Maguire, N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez the most obvious examples. And whilst Tielemens was not picked up for as cheap as the above, they could still probably make some profit on the £40m they paid.
However, a report from Leicester Mercury has provided some insight into Leicester’s future plans for the Belgian and it appears they are not looking to cash in on him.
Instead, it is reported that:
Leicester are hoping Tielemans will sign a new contract and pledge his future to the club this summer.
