Berge’s Sheffield United stint
Sander Berge joined Sheffield United in January of 2020, from Belgian outfit, Genk.
The Blades are understood to have paid around £20m to bring the midfielder to Bramall Lane.
At the time, Sheffield United appeared to have struck a pretty decent deal.
The youngster had impressed in the Champions League with Genk, and had several top clubs, including Liverpool and Napoli, reportedly interested in his services.
Since his move to England, though, the 23-year-old has failed to recapture his best form.
Berge looked somewhat out of place over the second half of last season, as he struggled to integrate into Chris Wilder’s side.
And the current campaign has of course proven nothing short of a disaster for all involved with the Yorkshire outfit.
United have been relegated to the Championship, having amassed a dismal 17 points from 35 league outings thus far.
As for Berge, he spent a good chunk of the season out injured, but has returned for the Blades’ last two league ties, which they lost 4 and 2-0.
Arsenal & Berge
Despite his struggles, a report from football.london claims that the midfielder, whose current contract runs until 2024, has a host of suitors who are keen to keep him in the English top-flight.
Amongst those suitors are said to be Arsenal. This comes with Dani Ceballos set to return to Real Madrid in the summer and the futures of all of Joe Willock, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny up in the air.
Crucially, though, FL add that Berge is keen on the prospect of a move to Arsenal this summer, which may give them the edge in the hunt for Berge over other potentially interested sides such as Aston Villa and Everton.
In terms of a fee for Berge, it is added that he has a release clause of £35m:
Understand that #SUFC‘s Sander Berge is keen on the idea of a move to #AFC. The transfer could be influenced by the future of his close friend and compatriot Martin Odegaard though who could end up returning to Real Madrid this summer. Full story ??https://t.co/vWKo2lBpIZ
