Zidane steps down
Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has decided to step down from his role as manager with immediate effect. The Frenchman had been in charge of Los Blancos in two spells since 2016, and has won three Champions Leagues in the Spanish capital.

It was a disappointing season for Real Madrid, as they crashed out of the Champions League 3-1 on aggregate to Chelsea, in a scoreline that flattered the Spanish side. They also conceded the League title to city rivals Atletico, meaning that they ended the season with no silverware for the second time in three years.
Players thought otherwise:
Previously, rumours had persisted that Zidane had told the players before the end of the La Liga season that he was stepping down, but that was rubbished by all parties involved. Indeed, Karim Benzema said to L’Equipe that:
“Zizou has always been sincere with me. When I don’t get picked, he is sincere and when I have gone with France, too. I respect him a lot because he is very direct with me. He gives me a lot of confidence on the pitch. For now, Zidane is Real Madrid’s coach. I don’t see him leaving. He won’t leave, you’ll see. If he leaves, he leaves, but for the moment, I don’t see a Madrid without Zidane.”
However, it appears that Benzema will have to get used to a Madrid without Zidane when he returns from national duty with France, as the decorated manager has apparently decided to call time on his career in the capital. Of course, Zidane has previously returned to the job having walked away, and it is possible that the same could happen again.
Alternatively, Antonio Conte could quickly find himself with a new job having agreed to depart Inter Milan earlier the same day. The Italian boss led his side to their first Serie A title since 2010, but financial constraints made clear to him through conversations with the owner meant that he left before his squad was decimated.

It remains to be seen if the Italian is looking to return to management immediately, but the Real Madrid job is one coveted by most managers, and one that Conte will surely consider.
