Zidane’s letter
Zinedine Zidane left Real Madrid after trophyless season.
Upon his decision to leave he wrote a letter to the Real Madrid supporters explaining his choice.
Within, he spoke honestly about some of the issues he had faced from within and relating to the media coverage of his tenure:
“I’m leaving because I feel the club no longer has the faith in me I need, nor the support to build something in the medium or long term. I understand football and I know the demands of a club like Real Madrid. I know when you don’t win, you have to leave.”
He claimed information had also been leaked:
“That’s why it hurt me so much when I read in the press, after a defeat, that I would be sacked if I didn’t win the next game. It hurt me and the whole team because these deliberately leaked messages to the media negatively influenced the squad, they created doubts and misunderstandings.”
Quotes from AS.
This sparked much response and soon reports emerged that the club had foregone a penalty payment which Zidane was supposed to pay having left prior to the conclusion of his deal.
The clause supposedly amounted to a figure in the region of €10 million.
Reporter grabbed for 1-on-1 by Zidane
Zidane was in Vallecas to watch his son Luca play and was surrounded quickly by reporters asking him about the letter which he sent.
Asking whether it was the right decision. Zidane reacted angrily to the persistent questioning.
“Are you still asking the same dumb questions as before? Your job is a disgrace. It’s always the same with you. I know you and you know me,” he said through his face mask.
He was then seen gesturing towards the reporter to come towards him.
Saying, “Come here, let me talk to you without the cameras.”
Zidane then put his arm around the reporter and walked off as the footage stops. It is not known what the pair discussed.
