Insight provided into Gini Wijnaldum’s decision to snub Barcelona as massive PSG wage packet revealed

After Georginio Wijnaldum’s Liverpool exit was finally made official this afternoon, an insight into the financial terms of the Dutchman’s Paris Saint-Germain contract has been forthcoming.

Speculation surrounding the future of midfielder Wijnaldum had of course long been rampant in the media.

This came with the former Newcastle man having snubbed the efforts of those at Anfield to tie him down to fresh terms, ahead of the expiration of his contract this summer.

In turn, for some time, La Liga giants Barcelona were widely viewed as the runaway favourites to clinch Wijnaldum’s signature.

The Blaugrana are of course currently managed by Ronald Koeman, who spent time overseeing the now ex-Liverpool star’s development during a stint in charge of the Netherlands.

Some outlets even went as far as to suggest that a pre-contract agreement had already been found between the parties.

PSG splash the cash

It therefore came as something of a surprise when, over the last couple of weeks, reports in the media began to mount that Wijnaldum was in fact leaning away from the Camp Nou, and towards another of European football’s heavyweights.

The outfit in question? Paris Saint-Germain.

It was suggested that the French giants had tabled a considerably more lucrative financial offer than their Spanish counterparts, turning Wijnaldum’s head in the process.

And, as outlined above, the willingness of those in a position of power at the Parc des Princes to open their wallets has today borne fruit.

As confirmed in a series of posts across the club’s social media platforms, PSG have clinched the Dutchman’s signature on a 3-year deal:

The precise figure set to be taken home by Wijnaldum across his stretch in Paris, meanwhile, has also been revealed.

As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 30-year-old is expected to bag a cool €9.5m-per-season until 2024, more than double what he would have earned at Barcelona:

Georginio Wijnaldum is set to sign with Paris Saint-Germain until June 2024 after his Barcelona turnaround – salary expected around €9.5m per season. Barcelona wanted to announce Gini signing this week but he’s joining PSG. 🔵🔴 #PSG
