Paraguay vs Bolivia: Preview
Will either of these two nations make a positive start to their Copa América campaigns?
Bolivia have been and continue to be the whipping boys of South American football.
La Verde’s most recent World Cup appearance came at USA ’94, having also made it to the tournaments in 1930 and 1950; they’ve never won any of their six matches at World Cups.
Since 1994, Bolivia have won just 23 of 110 qualification matches, finish bottom or second bottom of the group in each of the last four cycles.
At Copa Américas, they haven’t enjoyed much success either.
They went out in the group stages in 2019, losing all three matches, so have fallen at the first hurdle in seven of the last eight tournaments, winning only one of their last 26 Copa matches.
They have though so far, enjoyed June 2021, amassing four points from two World Cup Qualification matches.
First, Marcelo Moreno’s brace saw them beat Venezuela 3-1 in La Paz before a late Moreno penalty snatched a 1-1 draw in Chile.
Even so, despite the fact only two of then ten nations are eliminated after the group stages, Bolivia are favourites to finish bottom of Group A.
With Argentina, Uruguay and Chile also in this section, this is their best chance of amassing points.
Will Paraguay start with a victory?
Given that Bolivia are CONMEBOL’s weakest team, that piles all the pressure on Paraguay to claim three points in Goiânia.
Los Guaraníes have qualified for eight World Cups in their history including four in-a-row between 1998 and 2010.
Since then, they’ve only won 11 of 40 qualification matches and have only won one of six in Qatar 2022 qualifying.
This month, they drew 0-0 with Uruguay in Montevideo and then lost 2-0 at home to Brazil.
In the Copa América, Paraguay reached the quarter-finals in 2019 despite not winning a game.
They drew with Qatar and Argentina in the group phase before being edged out by hosts and eventual champions Brazil in a nerve-shredding penalty shootout.
That continues their decent record in this competition, having only gone out in the group phase at one of the last six iterations.
If they win this one, with the top four out of five advancing, Eduardo Berizzo’s side would be in pole position even with three tough group games to come.
Will Paraguay be too strong at Estádio Olímpico Pedro Ludovico?
Prediction: Paraguay 2-0 Bolivia
Bolivia have only won two of their last eight meetings with Paraguay, their most recent was a 2-2 draw in World Cup Qualifying in November in Asunción.
Marcelo Moreno of Bolivia is currently the top scorer in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying; the Cruzeiro striker has scored six in six.
Paraguay’s Ángel Romero is the top scorer in their squad with just six international goals.
Only four other players, Gustavo Gómez, Alejandro Romero Gamarra, Óscar Romero and Miguel Almirón have scored more than once for the national team.
