Arsenal out of Europa League
Arsenal’s 2020/21 campaign came to a rather disappointing end on Thursday evening.
The Gunners faced off in the second of two Europa League semi-final clashes with Villarreal.
The first had seen Arsenal fall to a 2-1 defeat, but away goals meant that only a 1-0 win was needed on Thursday to secure their passage into the final.
However, another lackluster showing from the north Londoners eventually saw them forced to settle for a 0-0 draw on the night and a 2-1 aggregate loss overall.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal future
Now, barring a miracle, Arsenal are almost certainly not going to be playing in the Europa League next season.
They are currently sat 9th in the league, seven points off 6th with just four games to play. Everton and Liverpool – the two teams above them – also have a game in hand on the Gunners.
So, 2020/21 does look set to be the first time since before Arsene Wenger that Arsenal will not be playing in either the Champions League or Europa League.
This, of course, raises questions over the future of Mikel Arteta. It is fairly obvious that Arsenal’s squad is not perfect, but is it the 9th or 10th best squad in the league? Probably not.
However, when writing after Thursday’s defeat, Goal’s Charles Watts stated that it is unlikely that Arsenal will pull the trigger and decide to move on from Arteta before the start of next season:
Guided Arsenal to their lowest two PL finishes since 1995 and failed to qualify for Europe for the first time in 25 years.
The FA Cup win earned him credit, but that has long gone – so what now for Arteta?
