Tuchel on new contract
Thomas Tuchel has enjoyed arguably a near-perfect period since taking over as Chelsea boss, turning around the side’s fortunes culminating and a Champions League victory last night over Manchester City.
The German coach failed to win the trophy in last year’s final after losing to Bayern Munich as PSG coach. Yet, Tuchel has clearly proven his former side wrong in sacking him prematurely after winning the coveted title they so desperately want themselves.
Unsurprisingly this has led to links with the former Borussia Dortmund man earning a new contract with the West London side and Tuchel himself hinted it may have already happened having spoken with Roman Abramovich.
“I am not even 100% sure maybe I have already a new contract now,” Tuchel said.
“My manager said something about it. Let’s check this first. I spoke to the owner right now on the pitch. It was the best moment for the first meeting. It can only get worse! We will speak tomorrow. We will speak later. I will stay hungry for the next title. My desire is for more victories ands to grow as a coach. It would be nice to meet him a bit closer. We are in contact. Now it’s nice to meet him.”
Van Persie proved wrong
Ahead of the final former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie was critical of Thomas Tuchel’s usage, or lack there of, of Hakim Ziyech and Matteo Kovacic.
“It is actually a shame that the creativity of players like Ziyech, Pulisic and Kovacic – who I think is a brilliant player – is not being expressed,” he said.
“Kovacic is their engine and playmaker. Ziyech also has those qualities higher up the pitch, but he should have a much bigger role in the team.
“He is now constantly searching [for a place in the team], being played in all different positions.
“But surely it can’t be that difficult to give such a creative player a good position, right?
“You can also see it differently, first give Ziyech and Kovacic an important role and then let players like [N’Golo] Kante and other types work around them.”
Neither player started the match against Manchester City in which Tuchel performed a tactical masterclass on the field to gazump Pep Guardiola for the third time in just a couple months.
Tuchel’s team selection appears to be just fine considering finishing in the top 4 and winning Europe’s top prize. The fact is Chelsea have so much quality that player like Ziyech and Kovacic have to be superseded sometimes for the players who are right for the job.
Tuchel seems adept at choosing them so far. Bearing in mind Ziyech started the FA Cup final, a match in which they lost to Leicester City – Kovacic was not available.
