The Bale clause
After Gareth Bale’s hat-trick at the weekend, suddenly talk over the long-term future of the Welshman has spawned.
This has revealed news of a clause in his contract which provides hope to Tottenham Hotspur fans regarding what may occur next season.
Spurs’ Daniel Levy negotiated a ‘first refusal’ into the contract which would allow the north London side to take priority in securing a second season from the Welsh international.
However, Bale has previously spoken of a plan to return to Madrid. This is important because despite any clauses or first refusals Spurs may have, should Bale not want to come, he doesn’t have to.
“It’s [future] no distraction for me coming into the Euros,” said Bale.
“The main reason I came to Spurs this year was, obviously I wanted to play football first and foremost but going into the Euros, I wanted to be match fit.
“The original plan was only to do a season at Spurs, and then after the Euros, I would still have a year left at Real Madrid.
“My plan is to go back and that’s as far as I’ve planned to be honest.”
Bale’s clarification
This caused some initial friction and Bale was forced to clarify that he wasn’t using Spurs as a way to get fit for the Euros only.
“Legally my contract says I have to go back to Real Madrid, which is what I stated. I don’t think I was being disrespectful to anybody,” Bale explained.
“Real Madrid are my parent club. The reason I left is because I wanted to play games, get match fit, and enjoy my football. Come summer I will be going back. Then when I sit down with my agent and decide.
“Of course I want to be playing, but other things might get in the way, which in football is not just about what you want — it’s the other side.”
Bale struggled for regular minutes in the Spanish capital and his relationship with Zinedine Zidane appeared to have broken down.
He will have just one year left on his Los Blancos contract at the end of the current season and Real may want to cash in on the former Southampton man.
