Germany exited Euro2020 with a whimper at Wembley, falling 2-0 to a clinical England side.
After a relatively even first half, late goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane ensured that it was England, and not Germany, that booked their place in the quarter-final tie in Rome.
Toni Kroos, one of the more experienced players on the pitch, explained why it was the Three Lions that ultimately came out on top, saying that:
“It was difficult for our attackers to make something work with the long balls we sent forward. Our diagonal passes didn’t work out either, so we couldn’t hurt England as much as we wanted to.”

This was a specific tactical tweak from Gareth Southgate, who reverted to a back three for the first time in the tournament. The system got England as far as the World Cup semi-final in 2018, but had since been ditched for the more pragmatic back 4.
However, it was wheeled out once again for this clash, and proved incredibly successful, giving England the upper hand over their opponents.

With a young crop of new players coming through, including the likes of Florian Neuhaus, Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, along with current pair Ilkay Gundogan and Leon Goretzka, it does seem a reasonable time to hang up his boots.
Nevertheless, the classy midfield player will be missed on the international scene.
