Thomas Meunier directly judges his difficult season at Borussia Dortmund

It was in January 2020. After four years in Paris, I was looking for something that better suited my mentality. Between change of coach (Lucien Favre replaced by Edin Terzic), half-hearted performances and sharp criticisms, the right-back lived a most complicated exercise (17 starts only in the Bundesliga), not really establishing itself as an essential element within the Ruhr club. “This season has not been good for me. With Covid-19 and without spectators in the stadiums, I really struggled to concentrate 100% on football. Football was sometimes boring for me ”, he confessed before continuing.

Confessions of weakness and promises

“Critics on social networks? So it didn’t affect me directly, but I don’t need anyone to tell me that I played a bad or a good game. I can do it myself. I have said several times that I am obviously not happy with my season. He wasn’t the Thomas Meunier I know – and people saw him too. So you had every right not to be satisfied with my various achievements ”, he blurted out, in full transparency. Even today, the Red Devil (46 caps, 7 goals) does not yet know why it did not immediately work with the BVB.

“I also spoke to the club. I was promised a lot more, just like myself. I can’t tell you why we didn’t go together at the start. It’s complicated to explain “, he confided before concluding. “I think I’ve flipped the switch now. I’m just waiting to play the European Championship and start the new season with the new coaching team. It starts all over again, as if I had just signed for Dortmund. (…) I didn’t even complain once. I am sure that I will be much better in the future ”.
