Morata for Spain
Spain made it into the knockout rounds of Euro 2020 after a 5-0 hammering of Slovakia last time out.
Before that, however, Luis Enrique’s side were actually struggling a fair bit to find the net.
Spain would be forced to settle for a 0-0 draw in their opening clash despite dominating and would then draw 1-1 with Poland after again dominating.
One of Spain’s main issues has been a lack of a consistent goalscorer.
Alvaro Morata is La Roja’s no.9 and would score their only goal vs Poland. However, he has not been that clinical this summer and has missed four big chances at Euro 2020 – the most of any player at the tournament.
Following some questionable showings vs Sweden and Poland, Luis Enrique spoke out in support of Morata:
“With 41 games [for Spain], only David Villa Raul [Gonzalez] and [Fernando] Torres had scored more than him. In the other sides, only one player has scored more and that’s Harry Kane. Not even [Kylian] Mbappe, nor [Robert] Lewandowski, nor [Romelu] Lukaku.”
Morata speaks out on abuse
The support of his manager has seemingly not been enough to dissuade some ‘fans’ from abusing Morata though.
When speaking in a recent interview, the former Chelsea striker detailed the abuse he had received.
People are said to have wished his children would die, with Morata even left fearful of his children going out with his name on their football shirts:
“I didn’t sleep for 9 hours after the (Poland) game… I understand criticism for not scoring, I accept it. I wish people would put themselves in the position of receiving threats and insults to your family, ‘I hope your children die’… I had to put my phone away this week. Memes don’t bother me, what annoys me is what my wife has to go through, my kids going to Seville with their dad’s name on their shirts.”
