Tottenham Hotspur have hit the end of the road in their current managerial search.
Jose Mourinho was fired by the club at the beginning of April, leaving Ryan Mason in caretaker charge of the club.

Mason led the Lilywhites to a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League, only good enough for the UEFA Conference League, Europe’s third-tier competition.
The club have since led a high-profile search for a new manager- First Mauricio Pochettino was approached, but he was thought to want to remain at Paris Saint Germain, whilst talks to hire ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte also fell through.

Following this, it seemed as though they had settled on former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca, only for a move to fall through when Gennaro Gattuso resigned from Fiorentina.
However, a move for Gattuso failed to materialise either, in part due to fan backlash which saw #NotoGattuso trend on twitter. This latest failure leaves Tottenham without a manager going into the summer window.

BBC names six candidates
The BBC have named six potential candidates for the vacant role.
Among the names are international management duo Roberto Martinez and Roberto Mancini, currently in charge of Belgium and Italy respectively. Both have Premier League experience, and in Mancini’s case, experience of winning the Premier League with Manchester City.
However, Martinez would seem more realistic- His contract with the Red Devils only tuns until 2022, whereas Mancini signed a deal keeping him with the Azzurri until 2026.
At club level, Julien Lopetegui (currently at Sevilla), and Ajax’s Erik Ten Hag have both been linked with the job, although there seems to be little incentive for either manager to swap their current club for North London given the lack of European football and the likelihood of Spurs losing their star man Harry Kane this summer.

Then there are the managers currently out of work- these would be cheaper deals to complete, which may suit Daniel Levy in times of economic uncertainty. Eddie Howe, formerly the Bournemouth manager, has not taken on another role since he left the Cherries in 2020.
Nuno Espirito Santo is also currently unemployed, after a difficult season with Wolverhampton Wanderers. He has been linked with both the vacant Everton and Crystal Palace jobs, but is yet to commit his future to either club or elsewhere.

One potential downside to the appointment of Santo is his closeness to Superagent Jorge Mendes, who enjoys having freedom in the transfer market. This was evident in the signings made by Wolves, who relied heavily on Mendes clients including Ruben Neves, Daniel Podence and Rui Patricio.
Mendes also manages Gattuso, and was a key sticking point in the Italian’s role in charge of Fiorentina. With Director of Football Fabio Paratici now in place in North London, the pair could find themselves at loggerheads over transfer policy on a regular basis.

Another potential option is former USA boss, and briefly Tottenham Hotspur striker Jurgen Klinsmann.
“Spurs are still in my heart.”
The former Tottenham forward says he called Spurs chairman Daniel Levy about the vacant manager’s job.

Klinsmann revealed live on the BBC that he called Daniel Levy after the club let Mourinho go in April, and continued to say that “Spurs is in my heart, absolutely I would consider that, but if he doesn’t want to, you cannot force him”.
Although Tottenham have lost out on a lot of their managerial targets to date, there still appears to be a long list of possibilities, although finding one that is both an attractive fit for the club and attracted to the project of the club may, as they have found, be a struggle.
