Continuation of the third and final day of the group stage of the Euro. Today, place in group C. A group dominated by the Netherlands who, after two victories in their first two meetings, were already qualified at kick-off. Opposite, North Macedonia played for honor, especially that of Goran Pandev. At 37, the Genoa player had indeed announced that this was his 122nd and last international match with his selection.
In the other match, the stakes were, however, more interesting. In front of Austria at kick-off, Ukraine had to hold at least a draw to stay second. But once again, Andriy Shevchenko’s men did not confirm the hopes placed in them ahead of the competition. Immediately taken by the throat, Yarmolenko’s partners were put under pressure from the start: three corners conceded in barely 10 minutes of play, unable to make more than three passes, a lot of technical waste, the Ukrainians experienced a nightmare. Strong in the duels, the Austrians did not logically take very long before finding the loophole. And again, it all came from the best player on the team: David Alaba. After a dangerous first center (17th), the new Real Madrid player made the difference on a corner taken victoriously by Christoph Baumgartner (0-1, 21st).
Overtaken, Ukraine had to wait until the 28th minute of play to finally get its first clear opportunity by Yarmolenko. And then that’s all. Austria, meanwhile, had two break points. The first, on a strike from Konrad Laimer perfectly repelled by Bushchan (37th). The second on a counter very poorly negotiated by Arnautovic unscrewing against the opposing goalkeeper (42nd). On returning from the locker room, the tension logically rose a notch. But hot stocks have not been legion. The score did not change any more. This is excellent news for Austria, which therefore ends this group stage in second place and qualifies directly for the eighth where it will face Italy on June 26 (see the table of the final phase). Ukraine, for its part, will have to wait until the end of this group stage to find out if it will be among the best four thirds with 3 points.
Wijnaldum overtakes Marco van Basten
In Amsterdam, the Netherlands hit the nail on the head. For the “der” of Pandev, the Batavians played the game. However, it was Macedonia which thought to open the scoring by Ivan Trickovski before the VAR canceled the goal for a logical offside (10th). The Memphis Depay show followed. Very leggy, the neo Blaugrana signed the first two Dutch alerts (not on target, 10th, 11th). Cornered, the Macedonians once again believed to surprise their hosts, but Pandev’s strike came crashing into the right post of Maarten Stekelenburg (22nd). Three minutes later, Depay showered all these little people by opening the scoring on a service from Malen (0-1, 25th).
When they got back from the locker room, there was no time to leave false hopes for the Macedonians. Launched on the left after a good recovery from Berghuis, Depay was perfectly able to find Georginio Wijnaldum for the goal of the break (0-2, 51st). Seven minutes later, we found the two men and this time, the neo Parisian followed well to resume a strike from Depay repelled by Dimitrievski (0-3, 58th). A double that allows the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder (25 goals) to overtake Marco van Basten and Dirk Kuyt (24 goals) and to equal Rafael van der Vaart in the ranking of the top scorers in the history of the selection. 3-0, 8 goals scored, 2 conceded, the Netherlands signed an excellent group stage. In the eighth, they will face a third group on June 27.
