Tottenham speak out after footage surfaces of fan being asked to ‘put away’ Israel flag

Tottenham Hotspur have issued a statement, defending the recent actions of a steward during the club’s meeting with Aston Villa.

‘Not the time or place’

The Lilywhites faithful of course made their long-awaited return to the club’s ground earlier this week.

Spurs welcomed Villa to north London, for a crucial outing amid their pursuit of a top-6 Premier League finish.

When all was said and done, however, Ryan Mason’s men fell to a hugely disappointing 2-1 defeat, courtesy of Sergio Reguilon’s spectacular own goal, and Ollie Watkins’ finish shortly before the interval.

As outlined above, though, it was not the eventual result in the capital which went on to catch headlines across the globe in the aftermath of the clash.

Instead, this surrounded ongoings in the stands at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

Amid the latest troubling developments between Israel and Palestine, fans and players alike have of course shown their support for the latter in numbers over the course of the last week.

Paul Pogba and Amad Diallo held up a Palestinian flag after Manchester United’s game vs. Fulham.

In turn, during Spurs’ meeting with Villa, Israeli flags were displayed at points across the ground, as has long proven tradition with certain sections of the Lilywhites faithful.

Upon one flag being unfurled, though, one of the stewards on duty at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium quickly handed the supporter involved an ultimatum.

After first suggesting that it was ‘not the time or the place for you to be using that flag,’ the steward added:

‘You’ve got two options. You either put that flag away and it doesn’t come out again. The second options, is you’ll be asked to leave the stadium.’

‘Not an appropriate arena’

The aforementioned footage coming to light has since inevitably caused something of a stir, amid claims of double standards.

This comes after the FA, days ago, confirmed that both fans and players were perfectly within their rights to show their support for Palestine via the use of Palestinian flags.

And, as outlined above, amid something of a backlash on the part of the club’s fanbase, Tottenham have since released a statement.

The north Londoners, though, have defended the actions of the steward involved, insisting that football grounds are ‘not appropriate’ venues for the display of flags with any form of ‘political or religious affiliation’ attached.

‘The Club has always considered that a football match is a time to show allegiance to a football team first and foremost,’ a message sent to outlet Jewish News read.

‘A football match is not an appropriate arena to display flags of any political or religious affiliation or anything that could possibly be considered inflammatory – this can include national flags during times of political conflicts, campaigns or issues.’

Tottenham Hotspur has defended asking a fan to take down an Israel flag, days after the Football Association (FA) said players and supporters can display Palestinian flags. https://t.co/hFEcUSERFR
