Teen charged for abusing Maupay
Brighton striker Neal Maupay was sent abusive messages over Instagram by a Singaporean teenager.
The messages were in reaction to the 2-1 Brighton win over Arsenal at the end of the 2019/20 season. Maupay collided with Bernd Leno injuring his knee and keeping him out of the rest of the season.
Debates as to whether Maupay intentionally tried to injure Leno were had across media platforms.
? “Maupay tried to foul the GK in the way 90% of forwards would.”
❌ “Did he intend to hurt Leno? No way.”
? “I understand Leno’s frustration but Maupay’s just changed his arm.”

The now 19-year-old Derek Ng De Ren sent messages to the Brighton striker via Instagram.
He wrote:
‘You think you will get away for injuring Leno? No way in hell bruv (sic)… But don’t worry you will be safe you won’t be hurt.’
‘It’s more fun watching you feel pain when your loved ones go through suffering.’
Other messages are alleged to be more personal attacks on the lives of Maupay and his family.
The news coincides with the social media blackout which many organisations are taking part in, including Brighton and Arsenal.
Wright, Shearer discuss online abuse
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright was subject to racist abuse by an individual who was let off by a judge recently.
Wright reacted to the news on Twitter in February of this year.
“An individual wished death upon me because of my skin colour,” Wright wrote.
“No judge’s claims of ‘naivety’ or ‘immaturity’ will ever be acceptable to us. The supposed immaturity and naivety are never any comfort. So yeah I am disappointed. I’m tired. We are all tired.”

The Premier League published a video of Wright speaking with Alan Shearer about the incident and the daily abuse he receives.
He detailed how he hasn’t reported the messages yet and was unlikely to because of how little action is being taken.
A humbling and powerful conversation between @IanWright0 and @AlanShearer
We know this video will not stop online abuse, but in sharing this, we want to highlight the seriousness of what we’re demanding of social media platforms#NoRoomForRacism | #StopOnlineAbuse pic.twitter.com/m4OayJ0Mqf

101 has also taken part in the social media blackout across April 30th-May 3rd. More must be done to identify and see those brought to justice for the abhorrent messages sent via social media.
