The end of Aguero’s Premier League chapter

Sergio Aguero, a free agent this summer, is on the verge of joining Barcelona, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

More: Barcelona are also getting closer to sign Memphis Depay. He confirmed to his new lawyers that he wants to join Barça 🚨🇳🇱

The Argentine striker, who sits fourth in the Premier League’s all-time goalscoring charts, will be remembered most vividly for his last gasp goal to win Manchester City the Premier League title in the 2011/12 season. However, the forward has featured just 11 times in the league this season, returning a measly two goals.

But, despite such struggles, he looks set to sign a two-year deal in Catalonia, as Barcelona aim to bounce back from a disappointing campaign. It leads to more than a few questions surrounding why the club decided to let Luiz Suarez move to Atletico Madrid last summer, only to sign a similarly ageing striker just 12 months later.

Considering Barcelona’s debt, their targeting of free agents makes sense, and is unlikely to stop with the Argentine. Romano adds that Memphis Depay is edging closer to a move to Northern Spain, whilst soon-to-be free agent Gini Wijnaldum is also expected to swap Merseyside for La Blaugrana.

Koeman questions the commitment of board:

The transfer news comes on the same day that Ronald Koeman has questioned the commitment of the Barcelona board, both to him and the club.

Speaking to the press, the ex-Everton boss said:

“In the final part of the season I have not felt [the club’s backing]… If the club feel that a new coach and new players are needed, fine, but they need to communicate that”

Koeman’s position has been under scrutiny for some weeks now, with ex-midfielder Xavi tipped to replace him at the Camp Nou if the club decide to pull the trigger and sack the Dutchman. However, financial restrictions could prevent Barca from doing so, depending on which players can be offloaded from a bloated wage bill.

With Sergio Aguero incoming, and Memphis Depay and Gini Wijnaldum potentially set to join him, that need just became even greater.
