Scintillating Gareth Bale makes late case for permanent Spurs switch, as Vertonghen fumes over Sheffield United’s escaped red card

Welsh wizard firing

The Lilywhites returned to action a short time ago, in a Premier League meeting with the Championship-bound Blades.

The clash marked a crucial one for the hosts, who headed into proceedings still in the thick of the fight for European football.

Ahead of kick-off in the capital, Spurs sat in 7th, albeit in the knowledge that a 3-point haul would guide them clear of both West Ham and Liverpool.

In turn, Ryan Mason opted for an explosive frontline featuring the talents of all of Heung-min Son, Harry Kane, the returning Dele Alli and the aforementioned Gareth Bale.

And, when all was said and done, it was the latter who stole the headlines, on the back of a stunning hat-trick.

Bale opened the game’s scoring shortly before the interval, latching onto Serge Aurier’s clever dinked pass to lob over the onrushing Aaron Ramsdale.

The Welshman was then back at it again just beyond the hour mark, this time surging free of Sheffield United’s backline to drive home into the far top corner, before rounding out a scintillating individual display twenty minutes from time, with a pinpoint strike from the edge of the area.

There was even time for Heung-min Son to get in on the act, adding some gloss to the scoreline with a sumptuous Tottenham 4th inside the closing quarter of an hour.

The capital giants, in turn, now sit 5th in the Premier League table, five points adrift of London rivals Chelsea in 4th.

Staying put?

In turn, on the back of the action coming to a close at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it has come as little surprise to see Man of the Match Bale take centre stage in the post-match chatter.

The veteran wide-man has of course endured a hit-and-miss campaign to date, but, as showcased once again this evening, remains more than capable of making the difference when fully fit and firing.

If Bale can continue to produce at even close to such an impressive rate over the final weeks of the season, Daniel Levy and co. could be left with little choice but to seek out an extension to Bale’s return to the club.

Vertonghen not happy

In other Spurs-related news this evening, one of the club’s former stars made clear that he remains a keen follower of the Lilywhites’ fixtures.

Taking to social media during the 2nd-half, Jan Vertonghen revealed his frustration with Sheffield United’s John Fleck escaping a red card.

This came after the Blades midfielder was responsible for what many viewed as an intentional stamp on the head of Giovani Lo Celso, after the latter had gone to ground inside his own half:

The offside rule is a different discussion but this challenge… ?
