England Daily: June 11, 2021

Euro 2020 has finally arrived.

A year late, and still with far more red tape than we as fans would like, the international competition kicks off this evening as Italy host Turkey.

England’s opening game against Croatia is also drawing ever nearer, and the excitement is building across the nation ahead of kick off at 2pm on Sunday.

In case you needed pumping up, here are the five stories you need this morning.

If you missed yesterday’s five top stories, you can catch up with them, here.

1) Marcus Rashford enters The Lions’ Den

After appearances for Mason Mount and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, it was the turn of Marcus Rashford to enter the Lions’ Den.

The 23-year-old is already into his third tournament at senior level, and said he felt like “one of the experienced ones” despite his age.

He also revealed that when it comes to basketball, he would pick Tyrone Mings first and Bukayo Saka last, claiming he’s “just a rebound master”.

Rashford will be keen to put Europa League heartbreak behind him this summer as he, and England, look to bring it home.

2) Chelsea’s Reece James faces the media

Champions League winner Reece James found himself on media duties at St George’s Park, where he discussed which Chelsea player he’d pick for England, how he is dealing with success, and how he’s trying not to brag to the Manchester City members of the squad.

James said:

“The last few weeks have been very hectic, we’ve had a lot of games and massive games.

Coming here, you kind of need to step away from club rivalry. We had Manchester City in the final but when we come here we’re a collective team. We kind of push it aside and we’re one team here and we need to work together”

James also went on to name Frank Lampard as his idol, and reveal that he is in regular contact with legendary full-back Ashley Cole about his game.

3) Jadon Sancho names his idol

Borussia Dortmund sensation Jadon Sancho has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United for the last 18 months, with Dortmund apparently willing to accept a 95 million euro bid for their English talent.

Speaking to the media today, however, Sancho revealed that he is in fact a Chelsea fan, and like Reece James named legend Frank Lampard as his childhood idol.

Sancho said:

“I just loved Lampard & how he played his game. He was so direct and composed on the ball.”

? “My #ENG hero? I’d probably say Frank Lampard. I was a #CFC fan growing up, I can’t lie.”

Could this affect a potential transfer?

4) Scotland will not kneel

Yesterday we brought you the news that Croatia do not intend to kneel to show their support for the anti-racism campaign ahead of kick off this Sunday.

And it appears as though they are not alone, with news now breaking that Scotland will not take the knee either in their fixtures, perhaps most pointedly against England on June 18th.

It remains to be seen how they intend to raise awareness against racism, with some sides choosing instead to point to the respect badge that adorns their nations’ shirt.

All will be revealed on Monday.

5) Maguire returns to full training

The biggest story of the day was Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire’s return to England training.

— Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) June 10, 2021

The Englishman had missed the last month through ankle ligament injury, and was absent for all of the training sessions to this point.

Without him marshalling the defence, England have looked sloppy in their two warm-up games, conceding silly fouls and seeming flustered on the ball.

Whether he will be fit enough to start against Croatia on Sunday is another matter, but Maguire’s return would be massive boost to England players and fans alike as they build up to potentially England’s biggest ever tournament.
