Arsenal’s knight in shining armour

Martin Odegaard’s loan arrival at Arsenal has coincided with the club’s best form of the season, which he has been a significant part of. However, he remains a Real Madrid player and, unlike Los Blancos teammate Dani Ceballos, Arsenal will probably look to try and bring him back to North London next season. However, the decision ultimately lies with the Norweigian and his parent club.

For Odegaard’s part, he seems keen on making his move to North London a permanent one. Speaking to SkyDE, he said:

“I am happy here at Arsenal, we will see after the season what will happen.”

However, he recognised that it is largely out of his hands, continuing that:

“I’m owned by Real Madrid, so we have to speak to them. It’s important to understand what they want…”.

With Zinedine Zidane rumoured to be leaving Real Madrid at the end of the season, it may be that any new manager values the 22-year-old far more than the Frenchman did, and choose to involve him heavily in the first team. Arsenal fans across the world will be praying that the rumours transpire to be false, as Zidane staying with the Spanish club could offer them the best chance of keeping hold of Odegaard for years to come.

Willock on the move?

Meanwhile, young midfielder Joe Willock could be leaving Arsenal this summer. On loan at fellow Premier League club Newcastle United, Willock has played a vital role in the North East side staying in the Premier League, scoring in each of his last six appearances for the club.

And Manager Steve Bruce seems keen to keep the young Englishman at the club after his loan deal expires this summer. Speaking to reporters ahead of Newcastle’s clash with Sheffield United, Bruce said:

“He’s an Arsenal player. We have to respect that. But we’ll be having conversations with them. We’ll have dialogue and see where it takes us.”

He continued that:

“You can see him enjoying it and enjoying scoring. To take the ball off Joelinton for the penalty shows the state of mind – he wants to score. He’s given us another dimension from midfield. The distance him and Almirón cover from midfield is great to watch.”

A traditional box to box midfielder, there is no obvious place for Willock in Arteta’s starting 4-2-3-1 formation, and it seems unlikely that Willock will want to be reduced to a bit-part role in the squad again. Were Arsenal to switch to the 4-3-3 formation that Arteta has professed his love for on multiple occasions, the Englishman would be a welcome asset to the Gunner’s Arsenal. However, if a bid of anything more than £20m was tabled, it is hard to see Arsenal saying no.
