Ter Stegen to miss the Euros:
Barcelona and German Goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen has revealed that he will miss the European Championships this summer through knee injury. Ter Stegen, who played the full game in Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat to Celta Vigo at the weekend, announced on his Instagram that:
“I have decided together with the medical team of the club that I will do a complementary intervention on my knee. I’m sad that I will miss the EURO 2020 this summer with Germany.”
Ter Stegen has played in 30 of Barcelona’s 37 La Liga games this season, and has kept 11 clean sheets in the process. Whilst Barcelona have endured a disappointing season, exiting the Champions League at the hands of PSG and on course to finish seven points behind the potential champions in La Liga.
Ter Stegen just another fan:
Although he will miss the tournament, Ter Stegen will be taking his seat in front of the TV for his nation’s games. Although the image of a professional footballer crowded around the TV screen living every moment from the outside, seems somewhat comical, the German goalkeeper added on his Instagram that:
“For the first time in many years I will be a fan at home supporting my country, I hope we win it!”
One last swansong for Neuer:
Whilst Ter Stegen is an incredible goalkeeper, his appearances for Germany have been restricted due to Manuel Neuer. Despite being 29, the Barcelona ‘keeper has managed just 24 national team appearances, whereas Neuer will make his 100th appearance during the Euros.
Neuer has been an incredible servant for both Bayern Munich and Germany and was a key part of Joachim Low’s World Cup-winning squad in 2014. Domestically, the goalkeeper has 20 German trophies to his name, along with 2 Champions League wins, in a glittering career that has spanned 432 appearances for Bayern Munich.
The injury will also mean a more active role for third-choice goalkeeper Bernd Leno, who will presumably enter the tournament as back-up to Neuer. The Arsenal stopper has had an indifferent campaign for the Gunners, but will be hoping to add to his 8 international caps this summer.
