Champions League relocation

It seems a growing likelihood that the Champions League final is to be moved to the UK and specifically London’s Wembley Stadium.

Due to Turkey being placed on the red list by the UK government last week, the prospects of 12,000 supporters needing to isolate for 10 days threw UEFA’s plans into disarray.

Istanbul was set to host the Champions League final last season before the pandemic hits and saw the final knockout games played across the stadiums in Lisbon.

There is likely to be animosity from the Turkish Football authorities to another change but the switch makes a lot of sense.

Both sides playing each other, Manchester City and Chelsea, being from the same country and therefore the great majority of travelling supporters situated in England also, it makes logistical sense to make the switch.

The Times reports that in regards to the number of fans it could be less than Istanbul at 10,000 however, there is the possibility of a change to see more supporters be allowed entry.

Porto is a second option but last night there was a growing belief that the game will be held at England’s national stadium. Attendances there are capped at 10,000 but the FA Cup final on Saturday has test-event status and will host 20,000.

Impact on EFL play-offs

With the moving of the final to Wembley the logistics of the EFL play-offs must be considered.

The matches for League 1 and League 2 are set to be played across the 30th and 31st May, with the Champions League final on the 29th.

Supposedly the EFL are open to the games being moved to other stadia to compensate. They could also be pushed back by a single day to help accommodate a Wembley hosting

The Evening Standard reports that Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium or Spurs’ Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium could become the hosts of the matches.

Tuchel confidence grows

Chelsea have now beaten Manchester City twice in a short space of time. A 1-0 win in the FA Cup semi-final and a 2-1 win at the Etihad in the league.

Coach Thomas Tuchel believes that this still changes little in regards to the actual game however.

“I said before it would not change too much, no matter what result came out of this game. I will stick with that but surely it’s not a disadvantage for us to have this experience, in such a short time, of beating them twice,” said Tuchel.

What the German did however admit to was the fact that it gives his side ‘belief’ they can overcome the odds and beat the prospective Premier League champions.

“It gives us the true belief that we can do it because we’ve already done it. We’ll try to conserve the feeling and this momentum for our arrival in Istanbul, because we’ll arrive with a clear target and a clear objective to win,” he said.

“The best way to play a final is to be self-confident and I think we can conserve this feeling from these two matches.”

There is still some work to be done domestically by both sides and much can change before the final, wherever it may be held, takes place.
