Man City vs PSG

Manchester City and PSG played out the second of two Champions League semi-final ties on Tuesday evening.

After picking up a 2-1 win in Paris last time out, City held the advantage in Manchester, aware that even a 1-0 defeat would see them secure their passage into a first-ever Champions League final.

The Sky Blues were also boosted by the fact that Kylian Mbappe was only fit enough to start on the bench for the second leg.

Nevertheless, it was PSG who started the clash on the front foot, and appeared to have secured the chance to go ahead from the penalty spot after just six minutes.

However, after a short VAR check, it was made obvious that the ball had in fact hit Oleksandr Zinchenko on his shoulder.

From here, Man City began to gain control of the game, and went on to notch a huge goal after 10 minutes.

Kevin De Bruyne took aim from the edge of the box, but the Belgian’s effort was deflected, falling to Riyad Mahrez, who had little issue slotting past Keylor Navas.

The visitors came close to responding just a few minutes later when Marquinhos connected with Marco Verratti’s whipped cross, however the Brazilian’s effort hit the crossbar.

Angel Di Maria then came within inches of firing into an almost empty net, after Bernardo Silva was dispossessed in his efforts to start a counter, but the Argentine placed his effort wide.

In turn, despite PSG’s best efforts, City headed in at the break boasting a 1-0 lead.

Man City make history

The visitors opened the second 45 with an extremely high intensity, unsurprising given the fact that they needed two goals just to take the game to extra time.

This, in turn, led to a fairly end-to-end opening to the second-half, which saw Phil Foden and Neymar both miss chances. There were also some huge blocks from Ruben Dias, John Stones and Zinchenko.

The clash, however, was then all but killed off after 63 minutes.

A blistering City counter saw De Bruyne and Foden combine well, before the latter picked out Mahrez in the PSG box, who netted his second of the evening.

Magnificent Mahrez! ?

A beautifully crafted counter-attacking move, and the Algerian winger is at the back post to clean up for his second goal of the night!

The woes of Mauricio Pochettino’s side were then compounded when Di Maria was shown a red card after kicking out at Fernandinho. And, from here, Man City were able to hold on for a 2-0 win.

The result, of course, means that Pep Guardiola’s side will meet one of Chelsea or Real Madrid in this season’s Champions League showpiece.

Before this evening’s game, meanwhile, it was revealed that Man City had won their last six Champions League matches. As a result, the Sky Blues were aware that another victory on Tuesday would see them break the record for the longest-ever winning run by an English team in the European Cup/Champions League.

Their victory, in turn, means that the benchmark now belongs to the Manchester giants.
