Visitors run riot

Mick McCarthy’s men were back in action a short time ago.

The Bluebirds made the trip to St. Andrew’s, for a Championship meeting with Birmingham.

Cardiff headed into proceedings desperate for all three points, having seen the club’s playoff hopes go up in smoke of late, on the back of just one win from their prior six outings.

And, when all was said and done in the west Midlands, secure a much-needed victory is precisely what the visitors managed.

A stellar display eventually saw McCarthy and co. emerge on the right side of a 4-0 scoreline.

The aforementioned Wilson was responsible for all but one of Cardiff’s goals, opening the scoring inside ten minutes courtesy of a wonderfully improvised left-footed chip from outside the area.

Wilson was then back at it again shortly before the interval, this time bending a sumptuous low free-kick around the Birmingham wall and in.

And, after Mark Harris made it three midway through the 2nd-half, Liverpool’s on-loan midfielder rounded out a top-class hat-trick ten minutes from time, picking out the top-left corner of the hosts’ net with another set-piece strike.

‘Good enough’

Wilson, all told, has now racked up 7 goals and 12 assists across 36 Championship appearances this season, the kind of production which has seen his future beyond the summer once again called into question.

It appears unlikely that Cardiff will be able to afford the kind of fee Liverpool would likely demand for their gifted youth product’s services, meaning a return to the Premier League could well be on the cards.

In turn, speaking after his latest dazzling display, Wilson was this evening drawn on the chances of linking back up with Jurgen Klopp’s squad for the 2021/22 campaign.

And the Welshman went on to confirm his hope that such a development will indeed be forthcoming, albeit with the ultimate decision remaining ‘out of his hands’:

‘I feel I’m good enough to be in that squad.’

‘I’d like to think I could go in there and add something different.’

‘It’s always been my aim to get into the Liverpool team and play for the club I’ve been at since I was eight. But you know the quality Liverpool have got, the famous front three [Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane].’

‘I’ve always been confident in my ability and, playing with the players in that team, I feel it would help me with my game.’

‘But that’s out of my hands. That’s up to the manager there to make those decisions but I’m fully focused on finishing the season with Cardiff and playing at the Euros with Wales.’

‘I’m determined to have a good tournament there and, if it’s not with Liverpool [next season], I’m determined to get a move. I feel I deserve to play at the highest level I can.’

Harry Wilson hopes his performances on loan at Cardiff City will help him break into Liverpool’s first team next season.
