Kabak’s Liverpool stint
Liverpool of course signed Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke during the winter window.
The Reds had a nightmare campaign when it came to injuries, with all of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip sidelined with long-term issues.
Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, in turn, were forced to drop deep to help with the Reds’ centre-back woes. However, both have endured injury problems of their own, with Henderson only recently returning.
So, it wasn’t too much of a surprise to see both Kabak and Ben Davies brought to Anfield earlier this year.
Davies has not really featured since his arrival on Merseyside. But Kabak had been one of Jurgen Klopp’s most consistent starters at the end of 2020/21.
Granted, his Reds stint was far from plain sailing. But the Turkish international did form a fairly decent partnership with Nat Phillips.
Liverpool not triggering Kabak option
Kabak’s time on Merseyside, though, does look to be over.
When the 21-year-old joined Liverpool, it was reported that the Reds secured an option to buy for an initial fee of £18m, with the potential to rise to £26.5m.
However, following the end of the Premier League seaosn, it was reported that Liverpool were not set to use that purchase option:
? Liverpool intend to pay Ibrahima Konate €41m release clause
? Must be up front, no instalments
? #LFC not signing Ozan Kabak permanently (was option to buy for £18m + add-ons in loan)
? No decision yet on Phillips

And Liverpool have now, of course, signed Ibrahim Konate on a permanent basis from RB Leipzig.
Leicester eyeing Kabak
Liverpool’s decision not to sign Kabak appears to have left to door open to other Premier League sides.
According to Sport1, Leicester City and Newcastle United are now interested in the Schalke defender.
Schalke are, however, taking something of a risk and are trying to wait till after Euro 2020 to sell the defender in the hopes he can have a solid tournament with Turkey and drive up his price.
Schalke have rejected all offers for Ozan Kabak so far. They don’t want to sell the the Turkish international before EUROs. #S04 hopes that Kabak gonna play a good tournament and increase his price. Several UK clubs are interested. @SPORT1 ?⚪️ https://t.co/XAe9h7LO1w
