Defensive reinforcement on Mourinho’s radar
Having joined a side with the 10th best defensive record in the Serie A last season, new manager Jose Mourinho has set his sights on defensive reinforcements this summer.
Roma finished a disappointing seventh last campaign, meaning that they missed out on any European football for 2021-22.
Granit Xhaka, currently at Arsenal, is already being lined up to strengthen the defensive midfield position, with a deal rumoured to be there to be done, but Arsenal having rejected the 15 million euros opening bid from the Italians.
-Xhaka has an offer from Roma, although they’re understood to be some way short of producing a bid that would satisfy Arsenal’s demands.
-Arsenal plan to make several significant additions to their first-team squad during this window.

It remains to be seen whether Roma are able to produce the sort of funds that would persuade Arsenal to part with their divisive yet important midfielder, who featured 31 times in the Premier League for Mikel Arteta last season.
Ake on the list
Another player that Roma are rumoured to be interested in is Manchester City’s Nathan Ake. The Dutch left centre-back joined the Citizens from Bournemouth for 40 million pounds in 2020, but injury has meant that he has made just 10 Premier League appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Hello. An article on Ake and Zinchenko, two of the more understated members of the City squad. Happy to be there, which is nice. I’ve also tried to include more context on all the stories about players leaving, because I know it’s a bit bewildering https://t.co/lhSuv4DW24

According to The Athletic, however, it seems as though fellow left-sided defender Aymeric Laporte could be on his way out of the Etihad Stadium this summer. He has been told that he is free to leave provided a suitable offer comes in for the new Spanish international, although the current economic climate throws the feasibility of this into doubt.
Were he to leave, it seems unlikely that Ake would also be allowed to depart. Nor does he want to, with Athletic correspondent Sam Lee reporting that:
“There have been rumours that the Dutchman would be open to a move away this summer, although noises from his camp suggest that is far from the case”
Whilst Mourinho may well be interested in Ake, therefore, he may be forced to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements.
