The Divine Ponytail
For those of a certain age, Roberto Baggio is synonymous with football.
From 1982 right up until 2005, when he ultimately hung up his boots with Brescia, the Italian forward was considered one of the earliest creative midfielders to make the role his own. Making his debut for L.R Vicenza in 1982, Baggio went on to play for both Milan sides as well as Juventus. Indeed, his 13 million-euro move from Fiorentina to Juventus represented a world record fee at the time.
A Ballon d’Or winner in 1993, and part of both the 2000 and 2002 Fifapro XI, Baggio won two Serie A titles and a UEFA cup during his time in Italy. He became known as Il Divin Codino (the divine ponytail) due to his luscious locks and seemingly god-given ability on the ball.
Netflix’s Latest football show:
And Netflix have agreed to produce a documentary of the Italian’s career, due to be released on 26th May 2021. Following on from their latest success with the “captivating” Maradona in Mexico, which was released in November 2019, Netflix have chosen another player to achieve legendary status as their latest project.
The biographical film, titled Baggio: The Divine Ponytail, “focuses on the career of the famous footballer and his journey to becoming an icon of Italian football”
The official description expands on this, saying:
“By telling the story of the rise of both the champion and the man behind it, the conflicts with his coaches, the unforeseen events, and an extraordinary ability to react, it paints the portrait of an icon destined to become, over the years, a symbol of Italian football throughout the world.”
Off the pitch ambassador:
Baggio became as renowned for his off-the-pitch deeds as he did for his moments of brilliance on it. His philanthropic efforts saw him earn the Man of Peace title in 2010, awarded to him by thee World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, after he helped raise funds in the aftermath of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. He is also famous for becoming a practicing Buddhist, a conversion brought on by injury struggles, and one which is highlighted in the upcoming documentary.
