Enrique’s correct Laporte decision
Aymeric Laporte was called up for his first Spanish caps this year to many people’s surprise. He has helped keep two clean sheets and score already during the group stage this tournament.
Luis Enrique said Laporte and Pau Torres were ‘superb’ in the opening match against Sweden.
“I have seen the two starting centre-backs as sensational, they were superb”, he told Marca.
“They both played a game bordering on the outstanding.”
Laporte was the effective replacement for the omitted Sergio Ramos. The Real Madrid man, now set to leave the club he captained, was left out after persistent injury issues.
No other Real Madrid players were called up either by the former Barca boss.

“I don’t care” says Laporte
Laporte was recently interviewed about the criticisms he had received when switching allegiance from France to Spain.
Laporte had represented France at many youth levels but never made a senior appearance for the national side.
He spoke of his happiness at where he was and at the decision he had made. However referenced that some people have ‘other objectives’ when criticising his decision.
“If I’m happy, as I am now, people can say whatever they like; it doesn’t affect me much,” he says. “It happened at Athletic too, where there were also more people in favour than against. I felt everyone’s support and was very comfortable. People who treat this as if it was so, so important have other objectives.”

Laporte wasn’t clear about the ‘objectives’ he was talking about however.
“I don’t know. Think about it yourself. You don’t need to decide anything. ‘I feel this’, ‘I feel that’. No. I feel both. I’ve been here eight years.”
One of the insults thrown in Laporte’s direction is labelling him like a ‘signing’ for Spain. When asked how this made him feel, he did not hold back in his response.
“They can say what they want, I don’t care. I’m here. I’m happy.”
Spain now play Croatia in the last 16 with Laporte once again needing to be on top form to keep out Luka Modric and co.
