Solskjaer calls for calm

Man United’s match against Liverpool was postponed last week after protests led to a pitch invasion, flares thrown and security staff hurt.

The protest was in opposition to the United ownership the Glazer family who were heavily involved in the Super league proposals that broke down several weeks ago.

Due to what happened, the club and even its manager has called for calm.

“It was a difficult day for us,” Solskjaer said on Wednesday.

“Of course we wanted to play. We wanted to beat Liverpool for the fans because our job has to be getting good performances and good results on the pitch.”

Solskjaer reiterated the importance of fans having a voice but that what happened before went ‘too far’

“We have to hear the fans’ voice. It’s everyone’s right to protest. It has to be in a civilised manner, though. It has to be in a peaceful manner. Unfortunately, when you break in, when police officers get injured, scarred for life, that’s too far. That’s one step too far.

“When it gets out of hand like this, it’s a police matter. It’s not about showing your opinions anymore.”

Big changes to defend Old Trafford

Knowing what happened before

The Times has detailed the changes made for the upcoming matches in an attempt to prevent disruption and for the games to be able to go ahead.

A security fence has been erected in front of the other side of the East Stand to prevent fans from gaining access to the walkway underneath the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand. Another barrier has been put up in front of the United Trinity statue of George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton and Denis Law.

Even the routine of the players has needed to change who originally stayed in the Lowry hotel but found themselves confined to their rooms during the ensuing chaos.

United’s players have had to change their pre-match routine, spending the night at home rather than in the Lowry Hotel in Salford, after hundreds of fans gathered at the hotel before the Liverpool game in an attempt to stop the team bus leaving for the stadium.

It is unknown how many are expected to be present at yet another protest but the club’s fans will not be alone.

Arsenal supporters are planning yet another major protest after their display a couple weeks ago ahead of the defeat to Everton.

LONDON, ENGLAND – APRIL 23: Arsenal fans chant and hold placards during a protest against the club’s owner Stan Kroenke ahead of the Premier League match between Arsenal and Everton, outside Emirates Stadium on April 23, 2021 in London, England. The protest, which takes place amid growing discontent over the running Arsenal FC, was sparked by the club’s recent involvement in the European Super League. There was uproar from football fans across the country earlier this week when six major Premier League football clubs, including Arsenal, announced that they were to join the controversial “closed-shop” tournament. The 23rd of May is the target and a big turnout is to be expected.
