End of an era
Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon has announced that he will not be extending his contract at the Italian side, and that he will be leaving at the expiry of his current deal in the summer.
Speaking to BEIN Sports, the Goalkeeper said:
“I’ve decided to leave Juventus at the end of the season, I’m not extending the contract”

It will end a Juventus career, told in two parts, that has spanned two decades since he joined in 2001, and has seen him win 10 Serie A titles along with four Coppa Italia trophies. He has also finished runner up in the Champions League on three occasions with the club, whilst a year in Paris saw him add the Ligue 1 title to his trophy cabinet.
Internationally too, he has been a mainstay. Making key saves on Italy’s way to winning the World Cup in 2006, whilst he also has made the most appearances of any player for the Italian national side, with 176.
Astonishingly, this is 40 more than Fabio Cannavaro, who sits in second place. Such an accolade is a testament to his tremendous longevity at the very top.
Where next?
Buffon did not shed any light on what the future may hold for him whilst talking to BEIN, saying that:
“I don’t know yet if I’m retiring or finding another exciting experience.”
Leaving the door open to a move to another club will have many a nostalgic fan hoping to see him return to Parma, the club which he made his name with initially. However, with the money available in America and the UK, it would surprise no-one if he were to end up at a club in the the MLS or the Premier League.
If he were to retire, it would be an ignominious exit for an icon that has given his career to Juventus, with the Turin club in danger of missing out on the Champions League and having relinquished their iron grip on the Serie A title to Inter Milan.
He remains, however, a giant of 21st Century football.
