Jens Lehmann dismissed from Hertha board following WhatsApp message

Former Arsenal and Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has been dismissed as an advisor to Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin’s supervisory board, following WhatsApp comments made about former German national team player Dennis Aogo, who has recently been working as a pundit for Sky DE.

1/ Thread: Ex national team keeper Jens Lehmann has been dismissed as an advisor to Hertha‘s supervisory board. It follows What’s App comments Lehmann made about fellow former national team player Dennis Aogo. He sent these comments – apparently accidentally – to Aogo.

— Derek Rae (@RaeComm) May 5, 2021

The message in question saw the former Arsenal keeper write:

“is Dennis your token black guy?”

2/ I’ll try to explain this story but it may take several parts so bear with me. For background, Dennis Aogo has been working as a pundit on Sky DE‘s CL coverage. Late last night he shared on Instagram a message that came from Lehmann which said “is Dennis your token black guy?”

Lehmann seemingly sent the message in question to Aogo by accident.

Aogo, in turn, screenshotted the text, and posted it to his Instagram story with the caption:

“Wow, seriously? Clearly this message was not intended for me.”

Lehmann took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to address the matter:

“In a private message from my cell phone to Dennis Aogo, an impression was created for which I apologized in conversation with Dennis. As a former national player he is very knowledgeable and has a great presence and brings odds at Sky.”

Hertha Berlin president Werner Gegenbauer has also spoken out against Lehmann’s comments:

7/ Hertha president Werner Gegenbauer backs the decision by the holding group to cut ties with Lehmann. “Such statements in no way represent the values for which Hertha stands and is actively committed to. Hertha distances itself from racism in every form.”
