The Catalan press swears it, FC Barcelona wants to try to recruit a crack during the next summer transfer window. The names of Lautaro Martinez and Erling Haaland are also regularly mentioned. Can they really afford an XXL recruit? The question arises, because, for the moment, the Culés cannot even recruit much less expensive players.
The example of Georginio Wijnaldum is also very telling. While the Dutch midfielder was promised to the Blaugranas, Barça could not match the offer of Paris Saint-Germain (the capital club proposed to double the salary negotiated with the Spaniards), the fault to his complicated financial situation. Since then, Wijnaldum has officially signed in France. A big blow that also makes Barça fear the worst.
Indeed, another Dutchman gives the Blaugranas a cold sweat: Memphis Depay. At 27, the former Olympique Lyonnais player has been courted by Ronald Koeman for nearly a year. He even seemed ready to lower his salary requirements so as not to burden Barcelona’s finances. In the end, Depay now prefers to remain silent and dodge the subject, especially since Juventus has just made him a more interesting offer. And this is not over.
Barça finances block everything
Following the failure of the Wijnaldum case, Barça targeted AS Roma player Lorenzo Pellegrini (24) and Real Sociedad Mikel Merino (24). But again, it looks complicated. “Recruiting Pellegrini is difficult”, title Mundo Deportivo concerning the Italian (who had to withdraw at the last moment for the Euro). The reason ? José Mourinho is counting on his player and a departure will only be possible if a club pays the € 30m release clause. Impossible for the Blaugranas at the moment.
Same observation for Merino according to Sport. Extended last year until 2025, the native of Pamplona is estimated at at least € 35 million by its management. And if a club wants to pay its release clause, it will take out € 70 million. As you can see, Barça cannot match such prices, especially without having sold one or more of its stars. And as none of them seems determined to move for the moment, the summer may be long on the side of Camp Nou.
