England will face Germany and Portugal take on Belgium in the pick of the last-16 ties at Euro 2020.
England discovered their fate on Wednesday evening as the group stage came to a gripping conclusion.
Gareth Southgate’s side, who went through as group winners by beating Czech Republic on Tuesday, were scheduled to face whoever finished as runners-up between France, Germany, Portugal and Hungary.
All four teams occupied that position at any one time but it was Germany who eventually came second in Group F by virtue of a late draw with Hungary, while Portugal and France played out a stalemate of their own.
It will be the eighth time England have taken on Germany in a major international tournament, with the Three Lions emerging victorious in the 1966 World Cup final and Euro 2000 group stage, while Die Mannschaft won out in the 1970 World Cup quarter-final, 1990 World Cup semi-final, Euro ’96 semi-final and World Cup 2010 round of 16. The two countries drew at the 1982 World Cup.
Joachim Low did not receive the memo as he expects to take on an exciting team instead of Southgate’s boring boys.
“Hungary parked the bus, with everyone behind the ball, entering every duel and against England it’s going to be a totally different match,” he said.
“They play at home, they want to attack. It’s going to be an open match, more open than it was tonight.
“We need to improve on things, we’re aware of that and we need to be careful, especially at set-pieces. We can’t repeat the same mistakes again.
“But as I said, it’s a different match against England and we’re looking forward to it.
“This was the ‘group of death’ and we managed to achieve the second spot and now we travel to England. It’s great news to play in London at Wembley against England.
“The group stage is over and now we have to focus. It’s in or out now, a good situation.”
