“Drink water”
Cristiano Ronaldo is used to causing a stir on the field with his unbelievable goal tallies, crazy celebrations and general demeanour, however he has since been responsible for quite the controversy after removing two Coco-Cola bottles from a press conference camera shot.

It is known that Cristiano Ronaldo is not a fan of the sugary unhealthy drinks, so much so that he has spoken about his aim to help his son avoid them in his journey to follow in his father’s footsteps.
“We’ll have to wait and see if my son becomes a great player. At times he eats crisps and drinks fizzy drinks and he knows that makes me angry, but I guess that’s normal behaviour for a ten-year-old boy,” Ronaldo said last year.
“He has the potential to be good as he is fast and can beat players. That said, he needs to work hard and show dedication. I won’t apply any pressure on him but if you ask me if I’d like to see him succeed in football, then I’d say ‘yes’.
“However, I want the best for him always and that’s irrespective if he becomes a footballer or a doctor.”
Ronaldo was followed by France’s Paul Pogba removing a Heineken bottle from in front of him.

More players follow suit
This is gradually becoming more damaging for the Euro 2020 sponsors Coca-Cola who are starting to see more players influenced by Ronaldo’s heathy message.
Netherlands Ryan Babel today posted a video recreating the moment on TikTok removing the Coca-Cola bottles and following with the same message of “Drink water.”

Then Scotland’s John McGinn made fun of the trend by asking “Nae Coke” when attending his own press conference.

The impact
UEFA and Coca-Cola will be reportedly ‘fuming’ says Tim Crow, a sports marketing expert who spoke with The Athletic.
“Coke and UEFA will both be fuming. The fact is there’s an agreement between them, which all the FAs and players sign up to, and one of the contractual agreements is going to press conferences where you’re surrounded by the sponsors’ branding.
“It’s certainly not ideal that one of the most famous and most followed athletes on the planet makes a gesture like that.”
Furthermore, the actions of Ronaldo and co have coincided with a $4 billion the share price of the drinks company according to The Guardian.
