Takeover talks ramp up after Super League fiasco

On the back of the European Super League debacle, Arsenal’s owner Stan Kroenke has come under increased scrutiny. with fan protests occurring before the last three home games of the season.

Into the breach between supporters and owners came Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, who took to Twitter to say that were the club on the market he would happily make a bid for it.

As a kid growing up, I’ve cheered for @Arsenal as long as I can remember. If KSE would like to sell Arsenal I’d be happy to throw my hat in the ring.

However, despite his ability to get Arsenal legends Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, and Dennis Bergkamp on board to aid his offer, it appeared to have come for nothing when his 1.8bn bid for the North London club was rejected, with Ek claiming that the Kroenke’s told him that “they didn’t the money”.

That seemed to be that. However, Patrick Vieira told the ITV football podcast that Ek had no intention of going away quietly. The legendary French midfielder said that:

“He’s definitely going to try again.

“He is going to be there for quite a long time. He’s a massive Arsenal fan. And talking to him a couple of times his desire and his commitment to Arsenal football club will be fantastic.

“Obviously, if the club is not for sale there is nothing that he can do but he’s going to be there and he’s going to wait and he wants to buy the club.

“I think it will be really important because Arsenal is in a critical moment. For me, it is the right time for him to do his maximum or to do what is possible to buy the club, to convince the country to buy the club.”

Reading between the lines:

Before Arsenal fans get too excited with what sounds like brilliant news, closer attention must be paid. Vieira expressly says that “if the club is not for sale there is nothing he can do”, potentially putting the brakes on any takeover talk.

This is especially the case as Josh Kroenke has repeatedly said that he and father Stan have no intentions to sell the Gunners, even amid fan fallout and external interest.

It feels as though matters will come to a head this summer. The Kroenke family have once again promised investment, but have yet to deliver on previous promises. If they fail to deliver once again, it may be a sign that they have no intention of owning the club for the long run, in which case a sizable bid may turn their heads.

Either way, the ball is firmly in the American family’s court.
