On Matchday 2 of Group D, Croatia faced Czech Republic at Hampden Park in Glasgow. Defeated by England in their first match (1-0, Zlatko Dalic’s men absolutely had to win to keep a hope of qualifying for the knockout stages. Conversely, the Czechs victorious against Scotland (2-0) could validate their ticket for the next round in case of success tonight. For this poster, Zlatko Dalic relied on a 4-2-3-1 with the only Rebic in tip. For his part, Jaroslav Silhavy opted for a similar system with Patrick Schick in front.
The start of the match was clearly to the advantage of the Czech side even if the latter struggled to approach the goals kept by Livakovic. It was not until the 23rd to catch a glimpse of Perisic’s first attempt on target, but Vaclík remained vigilant. Just after the half hour of play, the VAR made its own. Following an aerial duel in the area between Lovren and Schick, the Croatian defender let his elbow drag and was sanctioned after viewing the images (35th).
Croatia with its back to the wall
The referee indicated the penalty spot and Schick transformed the sentence (0-1, 37th). Almost in the wake, Rebic well launched in the back of the defense by Brekalo saw the frame give way (39th). Disappointing since the start of the tournament, Croatia was logically led at the break. Back from the locker room, the flock of Dalic quickly glued to the score by Perisic well served by Kramaric who adjusted Vaclík with a sudden strike (1-1, 47th). Far from being affected by the equalizer, the Czechs set out again to assault Croatian goals and Soucek saw his distant strike slip away just next to it (53rd).
In the last twenty minutes, Croatia pushed to snatch the victory but the strike of Vlasic passed over (72nd). Both teams seemed physically struggling at the end of the match, and the Czech Republic were content with the draw which clearly did its business. Jaroslav Silhavy’s men thus temporarily seized the top of the group with four points, and Croatia scored their first point of the competition. Luka Modric’s teammates will have to win against Scotland to hope to qualify.
