Tempers spill over in vital fixture
Tempers flared in the recent fixture between Chelsea and Leicester City. With the winner due to take pole position in the race for Champions League qualification heading into the final day of the season, the magnitude of the occasion led to frayed tempers on both sides, stoked by Leicester’s victory over the Blues in the FA Cup final just three days earlier.
Late in the encounter, a mass brawl involving all 22 players, along with several substitutes and members of backroom staff, broke out. The spark – a late challenge on Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell – was innocuous enough, yet soon every outfield player and both goalkeepers were involved in a shoving match, with Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger at the heart of things.

As a consequence, the FA have charged both clubs for failing to control their players, stating that:
“Chelsea FC and Leicester City FC have both been charged with a breach of FA Rule E20.1 following their Premier League fixture on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.
“It is alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players and/or club officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour during the 93rd minute.
“Chelsea FC and Leicester City FC both have until Tuesday, May 25, 2021 to provide their respective responses.”
A Big final day:
After the dust settled, the reality of the situation was made clear. Both sides remain in contention for Champions League qualification, though it looks far easier for Chelsea to make the top-four than Leicester, who are relying on either the Blues or Liverpool to slip up on the final day. You can read about the potential permutations here.
Regardless of whether they qualify for the Champions League or not, it will prove to be a successful season for Leicester, with a first FA cup win in the club’s history to their name, and a solid platform to build on for next season.
Chelsea, on the other hand, have a Champions League final to look forward to, and will hope that they can use a strong end to the campaign as a springboard to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
