With Euro 2020 edging ever closer, 101 sat down with ex-England international Joleon Lescott to discuss his memories of Euro2012, his experiences under Fabio Capello and how he feels this current crop of players will fare.
Lescott played under both Capello and his predecessor Steve McClaren for England, making 26 appearances in all, and scoring his only international goal against France at Euro2012.

We asked him if he noticed anything different between the two bosses, and how he found life under Capello:
“I wasn’t coming away thinking “that’s something new” which I was hoping for. He’s obviously a legendary manager. He’d managed some of the best players in my position ever so I was hoping there was going to be little nuggets you could take away but that wasn’t the case.”
He continued by saying:
“I definitely feel like he failed with the cultural aspect of it all. Yes we bought in someone who had a winning mentality but it was different to what the players had been used to. Prior to that, it was Steve McClaren who created a club atmosphere.”
“Yes we probably weren’t as successful as we would have liked tournament-wise, but the atmosphere there was a lot more homely. It had a kind of unity there that you would expect and hope for, probably similar to now.
But in terms of Fabio, there wasn’t anything that I thought was outstanding. There wasn’t anything that was terrible, to be fair, he was just, okay, which feels weird enough to say as he was one of the legends.”
Lescott isn’t the first ex-England international to speak of their reservations around Capello- Peter Crouch questioned the former-England Boss’s decision to ban butter and ketchup in a recent episode of That Peter Crouch podcast, saying:
“I felt it was slightly ridiculous, and then when the World Cup wasn’t going to plan, he tried to introduce them back in because he knew we weren’t happy “
Clearly then, Capello failed to get the England national team fully on his side during his tenure as manager, which may well have played a part in their poor performances.
