Pepe’s lifeline
Mikel Arteta’s men are of course in the midst of an absolutely crucial stretch of the club’s campaign.
Having long seen their hopes of success on the domestic front go up in smoke, the Gunners have switched their focus firmly to matters on the continent.
In turn, Arsenal made the trip to Spain on Thursday night, for the first-leg of their Europa League semi-final showdown with Villarreal.
A concerning display eventually saw the north Londoners condemned to defeat, but Nicolas Pepe’s late away goal could yet prove crucial in guiding Arteta and co. beyond Villarreal and former boss Unai Emery.

Before facing off with the Yellow Submarine for the 2nd time in the space of a week, though, Arsenal will first need to navigate a Premier League meeting with Newcastle.
The Gunners are set to make the trip to St. James’ Park tomorrow afternoon, aiming to bounce back from a pair of consecutive defeats across all competitions.
And, as outlined above, ahead of their showdown with the Magpies, Arsenal have this evening provided a fitness update on Mikel Arteta’s squad.
First up was the latest on Alexandre Lacazette, who has not featured in either of the club’s last two outings, after picking up a hamstring injury.
The Frenchman, in turn, will play no part once again tomorrow afternoon, but could yet return to lead the line versus Villarreal next Thursday night:
Alex is responding well to treatment and is starting to integrate back into full training. Alex will be unavailable for Sunday’s match, but will continue to work hard with the aim of being in contention for Thursday’s match against Villarreal.
Kieran Tierney, on the other hand, is in contention to feature versus Newcastle, having recovered from a knee issue.
Whether the Scot is risked, though, of course remains to be seen:
Kieran continues to make good progress and is now integrating back into full training. Kieran will be assessed regarding his availability for Sunday’s match.
David Luiz, meanwhile, could also mark his return at St. James’ Park:
David is now back in full training and is in contention to be involved in Sunday’s match.
