Portugal knocked out by Belgium
Belgium took a big leap towards a first international trophy with their golden generation after knocking out the current holders of the title.
A single goal from Thorgan Hazard was enough to give Roberto Martinez and his side the victory.
Portugal pressed hard in the second half and nearly scored through Rafael Guerreiro who strike struck the post and had beaten Thibaut Courtois.
Opportunities for Diogo Jota and Joao Felix came and went and Belgium should have arguably killed the tie off with a number of big counter attacking opportunities.
However, they held on and the fingers have already begun pointing at Ronaldo’s lacklustre teammates.
Much was expected of a Portugal team significantly improved from their 2016 success but couldn’t make the quality tell in the end.
Keane’s damning Felix assessment
After the match in the analysis of the game on ITV, Roy Keane went in on Joao Felix who missed a huge chance at the end of the match set up by Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Atletico Madrid forward who cost his side upwards of £100 million was laid off by his compatriot and skewed a shot left of the goal.
Keane spoke of his annoyance at the chance missed saying that there was ‘no excuse for it.’
“I get really annoyed with it, particularly when they’re quality players,” Keane told ITV.
“There’s no excuse for it, seeing players leaning back and just missing the target. At least test the goalkeeper. These are top players, no getting away from that.
“Felix, when he came on, that guy’s an imposter, he’s an imposter.
“He comes on, your country needs you…hit the target! What was he? £100m?”
Keane said he would have gone after the player after the game were he Ronaldo.
“If I was Ronaldo I’d certainly be going after him in the dressing room. Shocking.
“Felix and Fernandes were driving me crazy.
“They’ve no one to blame but themselves. They fought like champions to be fair, but Portugal were just short.”
