19 goals in 85 games – will new signing prove successful for Watford? – originally posted on Sportslens.com
Watford officially confirmed the signing of Nigerian striker Emmanuel Dennis as they prepare for life in the Premier League.
The signing is somewhat of a surprise. The Hornets are unlikely to have an easy season ahead and their aim will just be to avoid the drop. With avoiding relegation as their mandate, one would think that they would aim to sign players who are proven Premier League performers or who have at least been prolific in other leagues.
Dennis’ goal-scoring record is not prolific and neither does he have prior Premier League experience. He spent the second half of last season on loan with FC Cologne in Germany from Club Brugge and failed to find the back of the net in nine appearances.
Dennis started his senior career with Zorya Luhansk in Ukraine and has spent the majority of his career so far with Clubbe Brugge. Prior to departing from the Belgian giants, he boasted 19 league goals for them from 85 appearances.
It is not a prolific record but it must be said that he also was often deployed as a winger. Even though Dennis’ stats are not exactly prolific, his versatility is something that can benefit the Hornets next season.
He has also featured in the Champions League and Europa League for Brugge and this is something that can benefit the Hornets.
Dennis is still a young player and should the club not want to integrate him into the first team straight away, another option could be to send him out on loan to an English club to adapt to the country.
